Rabbit rescue

I’m a schedule person and I can’t imagine running a farm any other way. I sit down at the beginning of every week and plan out each work day hour by hour. But I can say pretty confidently that there is barely a week that goes by when something doesn’t throw the schedule out of whack! Farming is nothing if not unpredictable. Things happen all the time that force us to adjust and think on our feet and you never know what it’s going to be.

Our most recent (and one of our cutest) changes of plans was the discovery of a juvenile rabbit that had made it’s home on the farm. Mike was mowing down some of our winter rye cover crop when a tiny rabbit went darting out of the rye and into the garlic beds. Our farm is 100% fenced in, so we don’t have too many critter issues, but young rabbits are so tiny they can easily fit through the gaps around the gates. We followed the rabbit around for a while until it eventually found a good hiding spot amongst some of the bags and rocks we use to hold our row cover down. The poor little guy was totally petrified, so I was able to sneak up and put a bucket on top of it, slide a piece of cardboard underneath, and relocate it to the woods across the street. All in all, it was quite the adventure! It also resolved some questions. For the past few weeks, I had been noticing that some of the chard plants were clearly being eaten. The bunny seemed to particularly enjoy the yellow variety! We’ve used an old dog pen to add an extra level of protection at the main farm gate and the chard seems to have recovered and we’ll likely have the first of that available either this or next week!

See below for our entire harvest list. The store will open at noon on Thursday!

Fun story of young rabbit! We’re having rain similar to one of your years at the farm – so much rain for the past 4 days especially, but in the recent 2 wks it’s been early rainy season. No bunnies. Lots of frogs chirring after dark, waking us up! Fortunately, dogs don’t mind the pouring rain – 3 Rotties on the move is a blast in the rain. Really hope to see you and yours in August. OXOX

I am so happy that little bunny was returned to a safe spot. Poor guy. Good job using that method to catch him.
It is very lucky not too much damage was done. Kind of nice to have a small distraction once in awhile.
    Have a good week.

Cute story about the pesky rabbit. Glad you were able to catch him and relocate him outside of the fence. We are enjoying the lettuce mix and are hoping to snag turnips when the store opens on Thursday.
