September 2022

As we move into September, it finally starts to feel like we might be able to catch our breaths after a long summer of non-stop work! While the harvest will soon pick up again with the return of cool season leafy and root vegetables, the planting is finally starting to slow down. Today I seeded the last transplants of the fall (bok choi) and in a couple weeks we’ll begin to start planting in the hoop house again for late fall and early winter harvest. Throughout the hot months of summer, harvesting is a major job throughout the week, with crops like tomatoes, cucumbers, zucchini, and okra all requiring multiple harvests a week. As we move back into more cool season crops, the harvest returns to being concentrated on just a couple of days each week and the mid-week work instead becomes more weeding, watering, and getting beds prepared for their winter rest.

During September, we get some of our most varied harvests of the year, with summer crops still making an appearance while things like radishes, turnips, kale, and lettuce will be returning again in the next few weeks. See below for a list of crops that we anticipate being available at some point this month. We hope you are all able to enjoy the cooler weather that’s forecast for the rest of this week as much as we hope to! We’ll see you at the markets this weekend.

This summer harvesting has really been a challenge w/this awfully hot & humid weather. Having to do it multiple times
a week is really a yeoman’s job! I know lots of folks will be very happy to see the return of radishes. I’m glad we got
back in time for some of the awesome tomatoes. Enjoy this somewhat cooler weather.
