Into summer

It’s been the first week with temperatures in the 90s and both us and the plants are working on adjusting! With real summer weather upon us, it’s the perfect time to say good-bye to some crops until the fall. This will be the last week for head lettuce until September and it’s a good thing as lettuce won’t tolerate many days this hot. We’ll also probably be harvesting the spring collard greens for the last time, although the kale and chard should hold on a bit longer. Snap peas will also be making their final appearance this or next week, so make sure to grab some while they’re around!

Fortunately, the hot weather is also ushering in some summer favorites. We harvested the green beans for the first time this week as well as the first truly sizable harvest of cucumber and zucchini. This year, in addition to the traditional green zucchini, we’re also growing two alternatives- a brilliant yellow variety and a green-and-white-striped heirloom variety. And we’re keeping our eyes on the next crops in line for summer harvest- both the eggplant and peppers are sizing up nicely and should ready for harvest in the coming weeks!

See below for this week’s full harvest list and we’ll see you at both Burke and Urbana this weekend!
