Looking for shade!

It’s another scorcher this week, although we’re thankful that, unlike Fourth of July week last year, the humidity has remained pretty low, making the heat moderately more bearable. With the middle of the day fairly miserable outside, we’ve been aiming to get a lot of work done at either end of the day and fortunately this week we had several big tasks that we are able to complete in shady spots. This is our second week of the yearly garlic harvest. Our two earlier varieties came in last week and this week we brought in the final variety, called Chesnook Red. Although the actual harvest of the garlic of course must happen in the field, preparing and hanging the garlic for drying and curing takes place on our nicely shaded front porch, so has been a perfect task for hot afternoons. Make sure to pick up some fresh garlic at the market, as the “fresh” form is only around for a week or two. Read more about fresh garlic here.

Additionally, even though we’re just starting to experience true summer, now is actually the time we start seeding the transplants for fall harvest. This week, we seeded the fall kale and collards as well as the first fall lettuce. All of these will grow under lights in our basements for several weeks before being planted out in the field in August.

This week, the summer harvest continues to grow. The green beans have truly reached their peak. Additionally, the eggplant are officially in, so make sure to pick up some of these beauties at the markets this weekend! We’ll see you at Burke and Urbana.
