Deja Vu

The end of last week felt like a major flashback to 2018, the first year of our farm and the year that basically broke records for rainfall starting in April and running through the entire summer. Last Thursday, I sat in the hoop house while rain cascaded down outside, flooding the farm and causing a small stream to wash through the middle of several beds. We got two inches of rain in one hour! And because apparently that wasn’t enough, we preceded to have unrelentingly heavy rain through the night and the following day, resulting in a total of 5 1/2 inches of rain falling in less that 24 hours, a truly astounding amount. Another half inch fell in a heavy storm on Sunday and we’re just keeping our fingers crossed that it stays rain-free for as many days as possible so that the soil can dry out.

On the upside, the crazy network of trenches we had built around the farm in 2018 once again did their job! Our farm is located on a slope, so we quickly learned our first year that diverting water from heavy rain into ditches was the only way to keep sections of the farm from being washed out completely. The ditches worked their magic again and now we just have to hope that the beds dry out as quickly as possible to prevent any underground rotting of the plants, none of which are intended to get that amount of water in that period of time!

This week’s harvest list is below. We’ll see you at the (hopefully rain-free) markets this weekend!

What a great photo! Looks like he is very proud of that beet harvest. So glad you guys were prepared for this
ridiculous onslaught of water. I’m so glad those trenches worked because I remember how awful it was the
first time & how hard you worked to dig those. All the offerings look great so thanks for all your work, as
    usual.
