Weather

We were expecting to be inundated with rain today from Tropical Storm “Fred”, but instead barely saw a drop and had an incredibly humid, sunny day instead. There’s a reason people used to talk about the weather all the time. Back when so many people were farmers or grew food for themselves, weather was all controlling. We plan our work week entirely upon the weather. Yesterday, we worked like crazy and put in an incredibly long day to try to get what we needed done before the heavy rain. I also always try to plan any planting to fall just before with rainy days so that the new seeds and seedlings can be watered in and germinated by the rain, rather than relying on hours of hand watering by me! Unfortunately, weather is nothing if not unpredictable and as the storm completely skirted our area with the exception of high winds, I ended up spending the afternoon watering all of the newly planted beds that I thought would be getting watered by the rain!

We’re just a few weeks away from moving back into some of the cooler season crops, most likely starting with kale. Below is this week’s harvest list. Make sure to pick up some sweet peppers, which are hitting the peak of their season, as well as tomatoes, which will soon be heading towards the back half of their production window.

We’ll see you at the markets!

With all the dark, heavy clouds, I can’t believe you & us got so little rain. Fred was a loser tropical storm!
We are very excited to be back in the mix. Especially happy to have not missed the tomatoes. It would
have been nice, after all the extra work you put in yesterday, to have gotten a nice afternoon off but
guess not…watering always takes precedence. I hope this awful humidity breaks soon. It must be
almost impossible to work in it. Good luck this weekend.
