Tomato time!

This is one of the busiest times on the farm, hence the lack of a blog post last week! We’re heavy into the tomato harvest, which takes up significant amounts of time each week. At the time time, we’re starting to plant the first of the fall crops while also planting the last of the summer crops, so all in all we’ve barely got a minute to call our own!

We grow a variety of tomatoes and you’ll see a varied selection over the course of tomato season. This year, we’re again growing one of our favorite heirlooms- Berkeley Tie Die. This striped slicing tomato is both tasty and beautiful. Another of our favorites is Damsel. Don’t be fooled by the pink color of these tomatoes, which some mistake for an underripe red tomato. Damsel tomatoes are pink when ripe and are excellent sliced on sandwiches. This year, we tried a new variety that is a hybrid of Cherokee Purple and Carbon, both of which varieties we’ve grown before. Heirloom tomatoes can be tricky to grow on an organic farm because of tomato plants’ susceptibility to foliar diseases. As a result, we were interested to try this hybrid of two heirlooms to see how it holds up both in flavor and disease resistance.

This week’s harvest list is below. We look forward to seeing you at the markets!

Wonderful photo. I love those stripped ones. I really enjoyed them & the pink ones last summer so will
be looking forward to them again. Too bad you can’t get some of those dog pals to pick tomatoes! The
farm mkt produce up here in Duluth is about a month behind you. We just got the first new potatoes &
snap peas. Also got small broccoli & cauliflower heads too. Glad you’ve been having less humidity &
cooler night time temps. We’re getting the smoke haze & smell here from the Canadian wild fires!
