Summertime’s a-coming

After last week’s heat wave, it’s really starting to feel like summer is coming on the farm. The tiny gnats that drove us crazy last summer are officially back. While the crops in the field seem to have shot up inches in days, the weeds are growing like crazy, too, meaning we’re at the start of what is always one of the biggest tasks throughout summer- weeding. We were lucky enough to buy a used flame weeder from our neighbors who run a small farm down the road and Mike has been figuring out how to use it to make our lives at least a little less weedy!

Most exciting, the planting of all of the summer crops is on the immediate horizon! We are just finishing up laying the black plastic sheeting in the tomato, pepper, and eggplant beds that will help control weeds and keep these heat-loving crops extra warm throughout the season. This week, we will plant the first round summer crops that get seeded directly in the field, including beans, cucumbers, and squash. Next week, the tomatoes, peppers, and eggplant seedlings that have been growing inside for the last few months will finally get into the ground, along with a few cucumber and squash seedlings that I decided to start inside as well.

The hoop house has already almost completely transitioned to summer, with only a small number of beds still being harvested with spring greens for market. At this point, almost our entire harvest is coming from out in the field! Check out our harvest list below to see what will be available at this weekend’s markets. Along with these items, we may also have some of the first Hakurei salad turnips depending on how much they grow before Friday!

We’ll see you this weekend!

Love this photo and the word picture you’ve painted of summertime planting, from dealing with gnats and weeds to planting such a rich variety of summer produce. Good luck at the market this weekend. Exciting!

Yikes just saw the pic of Mike w/that flame thrower weeder. Looks rather menacing but very effective.
Bet Caleb will really like watching that in action!
