Fall ups and downs

As is usual with autumn in our region, we’ve bounced right back to late summer weather, with hotter, humid weather over the past few days. My body seems to have already moved on to fall and has not been to happy being outside in the heat and humidity. I’m definitely looking forward to the return of cooler weather, although, when the forecast is for highs in the 80s with a chance of thunderstorms, it’s hard to believe that our average first frost date is in just a couple weeks!

If nothing else, the warmer weather will help to give some of the late fall crops a bit of a boost in growth. Although we’ve begun harvesting many of our fall crops, we still have cauliflower and bok choi maturing in the field and look forward to harvesting those as the fall progresses. Last year was our first year growing cauliflower and we decided to include it in our crop plan again this year. We’ll be growing the same variety as last year in addition to a new, earlier-maturing variety, so hopefully we’ll be bringing those to market sometime in November! The bok choi should be ready much sooner and will reach harvestable size in the next week or so.

Below is this week’s harvest list. We’ll see you at the markets! Please note that we will be leaving the Shepherdstown market one hour early (at noon) this week.

Yes, it is rather warm but the weekend was glorious. I’m glad the fall crops will get abit more time to mature.
Totally forgot about the cauliflower, very exciting. Glad you’re continuing w/it. Also excited about the return
of spinach soon. Made your escarole recipe this week & it was delicious. It is such a vibrant looking plant.
