Changing seasons

As May approaches, big changes are happening on the farm. Outside, we finally broke ground on our last section of beds! We had decided to hold off on building these last five beds until the spring as we were already cramped for time last fall and figured we might as well leave the area protected by grass over winter. Mike plowed up the area last week and it’s definitely with a sigh of relief that we know we’ve completed the enormous task of breaking ground and building beds… at least for this year!

Inside the hoop house, it’s hard to believe that the transition to summer is already happening. After getting several weeks of harvests from many of the beds throughout April, last week we ripped out five beds of arugula, salad mix, and kale and have already transitioned them to plantings of peppers and eggplants, as well as using the still empty beds to provide a temporary home for the nearly 800 tomato seedlings that will eventually be planted outside! With the last frost date in mid-May rapidly approaching, now is always the busiest times of year. We have dozens of beds to prepare for plantings of crops like beans, tomatoes, squash, peppers, cucumbers, and eggplant that cannot be planted until risk of frost has passed. In addition, we still have all of the regular farm tasks to stay on top of- from weeding the plethora of already-planted beds, to trellising the peas, to continuing to plant the cool weather crops that we rely on for our spring harvest. 

This week, we’ll have a few new additions at the farmers market. We’ll be bringing some bunches of larger-sized kale in addition to the bagged baby kale we’ve had the past few weeks. We’ll also be making our first harvests from beds outside of the hoop house, including arugula, baby kale, and the first bok choi! Check out the full harvest list below!

    800 tomato seedlings!! That’s incredible. Looking forward to visiting the mkt for the first time tomorrow.
    Bok choy sounds delicious. Hope the rain doesn’t make harvesting harder than it usually is! Good luck.
